Exquisite Decline, a Buyers Market?
So as a resident Exquisite Base Set collector, I am happy to see how poorly the 2007 base cards are selling.
As most collectors know, the initial set produced is usually the most desired set made, and as the years progress the cards tend to decline in value. With a lack of demand on the 2007 Exquisite Set, I am wondering how low the “Book Value” will be when released.
I did a little research on book value trends to give an idea of the decline of Exquisite. I went with two top players who have been in the league for a number of years, Peyton Manning and LaDainian Tomlinson.
| 2005 Exquisite Collection | 35 | LaDainian Tomlinson | NM-MT | Own | 1 | $50.00 | $20.00 | $50.00 | |
| 2006 Exquisite Collection | 50 | LaDainian Tomlinson | NM-MT | Own | 1 | $30.00 | $12.00 | $30.00 | |
| 2005 Exquisite Collection | 19 | Peyton Manning | NM-MT | Own | 1 | $80.00 | $40.00 | $80.00 | |
| 2006 Exquisite Collection | 26 | Peyton Manning | NM-MT | Own | 1 | $50.00 | $25.00 | $50.00 |
As you can see, there has been a fallout on prices, but that would be expected. I do not think there will be as sharp of a price decline in the 2007 prices. I figure the Manning will come out with a $30-$35 High BV, and Tomlinson $20-$25. The luster of a complete set with a short print run seems to have faded.
The 2005 singles are not that easy to find on eBay for a cheap price, and once in awhile a cheap buy can be found, but it is not easy to win a single for under $3. The 2006 singles come in waves. Some weeks there are very few, other weeks 20-30 different cards can be found. These can be found for under $3 frequently for the ‘lesser’ players, but the Manning, Favre, Roethlisberger and guys of that caliber are hard to find under $10. The 2007 singles are not selling well at all. I have purchased quite a few of these for $0.99, winning with my opening bid, including Reggie Bush and Chad Johnson. Most players can be found at this point, so now is a decent time to start the set, if you desire to put it together.
Exquisite has an appealing base set. Most of the cards feature an ‘action’ photograph, and most have the football pictured on the card. The guys are always in a game uniform (at least for the base set, some of the rookies are in practice clothes). Overall, I find these to be great sets, and will continue my quest to put together each Base Set since its inception in 2005. I already have a complete 2006 set.

I think as the economic conditions continue to tank you’ll see this as a trend Hobby wide. It’s gonna be a great time for people with $ to spend. Congrats on the pickup’s, I’ve been able to pickup a few select items at what I consider good prices lately myself. If you look at some of the other boards lately more & more p/c stuff being put up for sale before E-Bay. Hope I don’t have to join that group but people do what they gotta do.

I agree with Bud here on the economy bringing a lot down. I think the card companies are going to realize it too with less stuff being bought, especially for the HUGE $/pack.

I think that it’s the off-season, and this year they released Exquisite much later. No one is really thinking about football this time of year.

I think there will be a trend as a whole migrating away from large base sets and creating short base sets that are tough to accomplish given the base cards per box break. Many mid range sets are now going the route of 1-3 base cards per pack. SPx and Ultra to name a couple have changed to hit per pack products and reduced their base pulls per box drastically.
The good part about that is eventually player collectors will be forced to pay small premiums even to get their base cards.
