Sports Cards on the Big Screen

The upcoming IFC Films movie, Diminished Capacity, set to release on July 4, 2008, featuring Alan Alda and Matthew Broderick, involves the story about Cooper (Broderick), a man suffering from memory loss, and his Uncle Rollie (Alda) as they attempt to avoid scammers and thieves when attempting to sell a mint condition 1909 T206 Tobacco card of former Cubs player Wildfire Schulte at a big sports memorabilia convention in Chicago.

While the card itself is not a necessary element, it still plays a key role in the film. What’s more, the creators of the film certainly have a pulse on the hobby.

After all, it is certainly not coincidence that the characters in the film head to one of the largest conventions in the hobby, which just so happens to be in Chicago.

And, it’s certainly impossible for anyone familiar with any of the hobby magazines or anyone who has been to a large show to miss the direct comparison between the character “The Mint-Mint Man” and Mr. Mint, the divisive bald-headed dealer who is frequently seen fanning a handful of cash.

The film seems to bring to light some of the seedy side of the hobby as well, as multiple dealers attempt to swindle an unwitting old man out of the most expensive valuable card in existence. One portion of the trailer reveals that Alan Alda’s character sold the card to an unscrupulous dealer for a mere $500.

  1. I laughed, I cried, I punched the wall because we don’t have a forum to discuss this movie.

  2. Last I tried this part wan’t working either.

    Does this mean progress?

If money is needed to get the site back up I’d be GLAD to pitch in my part. I really hope this is fixed before dual case break of The Cup in 2 weeks by a few members & myself.

The movie?? I’ll catch it on HBO later.

  3. Obviously the restore of the forum from January is not going well. There is issues with the restore and we are hoping that we can either get that up or just start fresh very soon.

  4. Either way I miss everyone from the site.

  5. I will hold my opinions when/if the site ever comes back…….

  6. I got an email from Tuff Stuff saying Mr. Mint is not happy about the portrayl of him. He even called a lwyer for legal options.

    Also, http://www.outsourcetoindia.com

    Can we try that site?

  7. I am going through withdrawal.

  8. Talk about an ego trip. I doubt if Naked Cowboy found relief in the legal system with the M&Ms, don’t think he will either.
