Box Break: 2008 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball
Price: $89.00
Breakdown: 24 packs, 8 cards per pack. Two Autograph, Relic, Printing Plate, Allen & Ginter Original, and/or Rip Cards per box! Each pack contains 6 Allen & Ginter Baseball cards, 1 Mini Parallel card, and 1 Dick Perez card.
Topps Allen & Ginter is back once again, including such out there cards as the Abraham Lincoln cards, including many autographs and relic cards of mostly baseball players, but other athletes and famous people as well. Once again the set has its run of short prints and its devotion to historical figures and events.
Before even opening the box I couldn’t help but appreciate the cigar-box style of the box. But that only lasted so long before I started ripping. As far as the actual ripping goes, this is one of the most fun boxes I’ve opened, simply for the variety of cards covering everything from Jack Cust to the planet Pluto.
I opened up the cabinet card first, pulling the Historical Battles card of the Battle of Trenton featuring Gen. George Washington and Gen. Nathanael Greene. The card is kind of neat, I guess, but I really have no idea what to even do with it.
On to the packs. This product is loaded with “rookie cards” as companies are now required to label them. I love the clean look of A&G, and the simple yet realistic sketches of the players. The short-print base cards in this set are all those numbered #301-350, and they are about half the print run as the other base cards. Of those 50 short printed base cards, I pulled twelve, including the short-printed Brandon Boggs rookie card.
My two hits were a John Smoltz Jersey and an Adam Kennedy Jersey. Ouch. It was certainly a fun box, but at $89.00, that fun is only going to last so long. It’s painful to have two single tiny jersey swatches as the two hits out of the box. But, I knew the odds before I played, and lesson learned.
The autograph set in A&G is great, and I may chase some singles, but I believe I’ll be staying away from busting any more of this product in the future. At least I managed to get that ever-coveted black border mini Pluto!
