The New Gold Standard

feature photo

Bowman Chrome is a much sought after product by baseball prospectors and collectors year in and year out. Famed for its refractors, everyone has their favorites - ‘Blue’, ‘Red’, ‘Gold’, ‘Orange’, ‘X-Fractor’, ‘Superfractors’ and regular old ‘Refractors’. What is going on with this year’s release? For those who haven’t had a chance to open, pick up, or scan eBay for auctions, the ‘Gold’ refractor has undergone a major renovation. Apparently an attempt to make some of the other levels (e.g. ‘Orange’) more distinctive, they ‘dulled down’ the Gold. Sadly however, they seemed to have gone too far, and what once was Gold is now more a dull Bronze. It will be interesting to see the reception it receives from the card collecting community.

  1. Without the gloss, it looks the color of cardboard. Although it remains to be seen, the gold refractors have certainly lost some appeal and likely won’t be nearly as sought after as in the past.
