College and Pro Football Hall of Famer George McAfee Dies at 90
Yet another Chicago great has passed away. Former Chicago Bear and inductee in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame George McAfee died on Wednesday, cause not given.
A two-way player, Mcafee played halfback and defensive back. He was also an exceptional special teamer as a kick and punt returner. He was the Bears first round draft pick in 1940, and played for them for 8 years. He was on three different championship teams with the Chicago Bears, including the 73-0 win over Washington at the end of the 1940 season.
In 1941, while leading the Bears to their secoond straight championship over the New York Giants, McAfee scored 12 touchdowns for the Bears: six by rushing, three receiving, one punt return, one kickoff return and one interception return.
McAfee was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 1961 for his accomplishments at Duke University (apparently before they realized they were a basketball school). He also starred in baseball and track while at Duke.
Following his football career, McAfee spent his retirement in Durham, North Carolina where he ran an oil business.
