Topps Announces T206 Set; Collectors Yawn

Topps, in an effort to go way outside the box (seriously, this just hasn’t been done before), announced it will be releasing a T-206 Baseball 100th Anniversary set.  As posted on the Topps website:

Showcasing Topps classic photography, these cards offer a unique perspective of 300 current, future, and legendary MLB players.  T-206 Baseball 100th Anniversary also pays homage to the modern era with autographed, relic, parallel, and printing plate cards.

Apparently the Shock and Awe Committee at Topps headquarters forgot they’ve already done this with the Allen & Ginter sets in baseball, and more recently with Mayo in football.  While the set collectors came out in full force upon the initial release of A&G, the incredible lack of bang for your buck with these products leaves much to be desired among the mainstream collectors.  What we’re left with are a bunch of base cards with a blatantly unoriginal design and an average of two hits per box, most of which are single-color jersey swatches, for usually around $80+.

A celebration of one of the greatest sets of all time is certainly deserved.  But these re-tread sets have run their course and the novelty is just no longer there.
