Keeping it fresh….

Keeping up your interest in the hobby is one of the biggest hurdles facing collectors.  The high price of wax, annoyance of dealing with ebay and many of its’ sellers,  and the general frustration of finding those last few cards you need to knock off your set can wear even the most sane of us down.  While I don’t claim to be sane, I can claim to be one who has experienced the menopauseof collecting first hand.  Having players from your favorite college teams get drafted or reach the pro level helps renew the interest of us, sometimes you need a longer lasting flexible goal.  While I plan on going after some of my favorite cards from the latest crop of Ducks to reach the NFL, I’m also beginning on a new venture, Duck related of course.  My new plan is to collect (wherever possible) a rookie card and autograph of everyone who has worn the green/white/yellow and black to reach the NFL.  Highlighting the collection, of course, will be the rookies/autographs of those who have been enshrined in Canton:

  • Norm Van Brocklin, Enshrined in 1971
  • Tuffy Leemans, Enshrined in 1978*
  • Dan Fouts, Enshrined in 1993
  • Mel Renfro, Enshrined in 1996
  • Dave Wilcox, Enshrined in 2000
  • Gary Zimmerman, Enshrined in 2008

I put an * by Tuffy Leemans only because of those 6 names, he did not graduate from Oregon, only spent one year there before transferring to George Washington for final 2 years.  Not sure, but figured would add him to the list for now.  Anyway, those five will be the tip, have hundreds more to pursue, but those ventures can wait for future entries…
