Behind the Hair

2008 SP Legendary Cuts continued the trend of card makers finding unique ways to ‘woo’ collectors, providing those unique and rare chase items, in this case in the form of a  subset called ‘Hair Cut Signatures’ .  Abe Lincoln is a well known example from this set, as its’ card story made the Wall Street Journal, but the set includes others such as George Washington and Geronimo (as pictured on right).  Just as many old ‘collectible’ items are reprocessed by companies to be inserted as ‘cut’ autographs (originally only for deceased players, but sadly all to many cuts are of living players as well), card companies are now recycling the collections of others.  In the case of many of the Hair Cut signature cards, they were acquired from John Reznikoff, President of University Archives in Westport, CT.  As written in the Wall Street Journal article, John began collecting ‘hair’ in the late ’80s when he acquired his first collection of locks.  From collections such as these card companies are ‘reprocessing’ collectible material as a way to entice high end collectors into busting their products.   With this set on the books, we can add  Genetic Material (aka hair) to the list of items cut up by companies all for the ‘benefit’ of collectors, joining historical documents, clothing/uniforms, pieces of stadiums, jerseys and balls.  Makes you question how far they will go to further sell us on their high end collectible products.

  1. I really think it’s crazy. Is that really Geronimo’s cut signature? Do they do DNA testing to see if the hair is real? I recently saw a show about a woman who has a huge hair collection with an entire room full. She claimed to have the hair of the Virgin Mary. How is that even possible to know that it’s her hair?
