September 15th will mark the premier of Upper Deck’s latest product issue, 2009 MLB Goodwin Champions.  As with a much celebrated product Allen & Ginter, Goodwin Champions is another ‘reproduction’ of a historical set, albeit one with many new and interesting features.  As with A&G, this set features athletes from several sports, historical figures, and yes even animals.  Autograph seekers will love opportunity to pull stars such as Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter and LebronJames all in one set, while vintage hounds may like opportunity to obtain buy back original 1888 Goodwin Champion cards.  Where Upper Deck continues to push the boundaries are with the one per case Hobby Exclusive memorabilia chase cards:

• Entomology – A collection of DNA memorabilia cards focusing on astounding & rare butterflies and other amazing insects from across the globe! 
• Landmarks - These memorabilia cards feature actual elements from the most famous landmarks around the world including coal from the Titanic wreck and salt from the Dead Sea.
• Thoroughbred Hair Cuts– Set of DNA memorabilia cards that will feature strands of hair from the manes of some of the world’s most-famed racing horses! Look for hair strands from the likes of Afleet Alex, Funny Cide and the legendary Smarty Jones!

Blowoutcards has 12 box cases pre-selling for $735 (12/20/5), so roughly $62 dollars a hobby box.  Each box ’should have’ on average one hard signed autograph and two memorabilia cards, and features one mini per pack.  There is a moderately sized ‘base’ of 150, with 40 short prints and 20 super short prints.    All in all it looks like a moderately priced fun rip.  While some of the super star autos they have included will be definate hot sells, it will be curious to see how the market responds to their latest innovations.  To see a video of this release click here.
