Surprised watching that clip that it doesn't occur more often (or does it?). Hope he's fit soon.

There have been a couple of real serious ones, Clint Malarchuk and Richard Zednik both had their jugulars severed and almost bled to death on the ice before it was contained. It seems to be a freak occurence though happening once every couple of years. The protection is usually quite effective and it becomes a rarity.

Ward must have got it pretty decent on the inner leg though as there was a good bit of blood on the ice in the crease.
