I rarely have time to listen to new music, so it's usually the old standbys-the Dead, Little Feat, REM, 10,000 Maniacs, Jackson Browne.

I have pretty eclectic taste, ranging from Reggae to Country to Hard Rock (no metal), but I've always had a soft spot for female singers, so 10,000 Maniacs and Indigo Girls have always been a couple of my favorites and I like alot of the less-twangy stuff that the Dixie Chicks do.

Given my weakness for the girls, I decided to check out the two current critical darlings, Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen (I know, I'm behind the time, but I'm also 42 with a 6- and a 6-year old). Here's my take: Amy Winehouse is overrated in my book. Jazz pop has been done alot better by Nina Simone and even Erykah Badu in years past. Lily Allen, on the other hand, was a revelation. I knew nothing about her going in, and her album blew me away. Thinking it was going to be some harmless Brit pop, instead it's this hybrid ska/reggae/punk/pop with some of the harshest, foulest lyrics about breakups you will ever hear. Don't play it around the kiddies. I am listening to this album constantly.

One of my co-workers last year turned me onto a group called Ten Mile Tide that I also highly recommend. Migraine may know them, as they are an independent SF band. They recently switched lead singers and sound like your standard Dead wannabe band (think Solar Circus, for you old Deadheads who know what I'm talking about), but their first two albums are great, kind of like a folk pop.

I'd be happy to upload some songs if anyone is interested in hearing some of this stuff, and look forward to some suggestions.

Jason has a thing for Joss Stone

I sort of dig Daddy Yankee, but he doesn't speak in english but his new CD he did with a lot of different people like Fergie, Will I Am, Akon. Kinda makes you dance around no matter what.

I like some of the newer age stuff like Three Days Grace, their CD One-X is GREAT!!! (Second most CD played in my truck, Daddy Yankee being the first) Fall Out Boys new CD has to grow on you. I bought Lifehouse's new CD, but haven't listened to all of it, sort of mellow.

Daughtry is a MUST HAVE CD!!! Great CD, hell I think you should aim NOT to win American Idol cause the ones that don't win, tend to sell better. I have 13.51GB in music on my itunes (most CD's I actually bought) and my brother has filled my 30GB ipod with music that is different than what I have. He's got everything from classical, jazz, oldies, 80's rock and pop, to newer rap and stuff. I think between us we have almost 50GB of music

I'd encourage you to give Amy Winehouse a couple more listens, I'll agree she's not amazing but there are a couple songs a\on that CD that I really love.

My recommendations for you would be: The Shins, The Decemberists, and Spoon... if you're interested in buying a few CD's from them I'd say:

The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Decemberists - The Crane Wife or Picaresque

Thanks. I'll check this stuff out and let you know what I think. I have the Daughtry CD. I don't listen to it much, but my wife does. Some good stuff on there.

Don't really dislike Amy Winehouse. My wife loves the newest CD, but she's a big Nina Simone fan, so I guess it makes sense. I think the problem for me is that the Lily Allen stuff blew her away in comparison. But I agree that sometimes it takes a few listens before you fully appreciate certain stuff.

As for the others, I'm gonna check them out and let you know. Thanks for letting me know which CDs to look for.

Today I am checking out the latest CD by Polyphonic Spree. I've wanted to try them ever since they appeared in the Scrubs episode. Also just picked up Fossil Fuel: the XTC Singles Collection 1977-1992. XTC was a great band that never reached it's popularity potential because the lead singer, Andy Partridge, had a nervous breakdown on stage and they couldn't tour.
